All too often I am approached with a story of a 'good dog' who suddenly bites "out of nowhere". The story usually goes something like this: "I was just petting him and he snapped" or "He went over to greet my friend with his tail wagging and then all of a sudden turned on her".

Proper precautions should always be taken in new untested or untrained situations, such as keeping the dog on a training line and treating the experience as a training session. ......If there needs to be a golden rule in teaching a solid recall it would be to never call the dog over for something he will perceive as undesirable (positive or negative punishment).
